Girona Airport, a city in the north of Catalonia, was Ryanair’s first airbase in Spain in 2002, and one of the Irish airline’s first four major European hubs. Marketed as Barcelona-Girona, more than 80% of the flights in the airport are operated by the Irish airline, with significant socioeconomic impact on the region. In August 2019, Ryanair announced its intention to close the Catalan base.
To avoid the closure of Girona’s airport, cabin crew workers agreed to renew their contracts based on significantly lower labour conditions imposed by the company. Cabin crew unions USO and SITCPLA denounced illegal clauses in the new contracts and extortions at the bargaining table, another complaint to add to the dozens of claims and lawsuits against Ryanair for labour rights violations in Spain.

Concluded Without Agreement delves into the working conditions of Ryanair’s Girona cabin crew and the pressure they are under with the constant threat of the airbase closure. Presented around a bargaining table, the sound and text installation draws on first-hand interviews with union representatives who experienced the bargaining process, articles that appeared in the Spanish media about the cabin crew struggle, and the resolution of the trial against Ryanair for fraud and coercion of its employees.
